Case No. 7: Winona Ryder

In December 2001, this darling of '90s indie cinema strolled into a Beverly Hills luxury department store and left with more than $5,500 in unpaid merchandise — and, eventually, a felony conviction.

The full story

Winona Ryder was convicted of grand theft and vandalism in 2002 for shoplifting from Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills. She was sentenced to probation and community service, stepped back from Hollywood for several years, and later returned to A-list status with Netflix's Stranger Things.

The clues we handed out

— Store security testified she came prepared — allegedly carrying scissors to snip off security tags.

— By age 23 she had already earned two Oscar nominations.

— She dated a certain Mr. Depp in the early '90s; his tattoo required an edit after the breakup.

— Two decades later she made her comeback fighting monsters from an upside-down dimension.

— Initials: W.R.
