Case No. 96: Dave Grohl

When a church best known for picketing funerals turned up outside this frontman's Kansas City gig in 2011, he had the bus pull over, climbed onto a flatbed truck in a trucker costume, and played the protesters a song about personal hygiene.

The full story

In September 2011, members of Westboro Baptist Church picketed a Foo Fighters concert at the Sprint Center in Kansas City. Dave Grohl and the band arrived on a flatbed truck dressed as truckers and performed 'Keep It Clean (Hot Buns)' — a song from a spoof video the band had released earlier that year — to the picket line. Grohl addressed the protesters first: 'It doesn't matter if you're black or white, or purple or green. Whether you're Pennsylvanian or Transylvanian, Lady Gaga or Lady Antebellum. Men loving women, women loving men, men loving men and women loving women.' BBC Newsbeat reported it at the time. The church picketed the band in Kansas City again in August 2015, and the band drove past in a pickup truck playing Rick Astley's 'Never Gonna Give You Up'.

The clues we handed out

— The song was 'Keep It Clean (Hot Buns)', lifted from a spoof video his band had put out earlier the same year.

— He gave the picket a short speech first: 'It doesn't matter if you're black or white, or purple or green… men loving women, women loving men, men loving men and women loving women.'

— The same church picketed the same band in the same city again four years later. That time they got a pickup truck playing Rick Astley at them.

— He drummed in Nirvana before he started singing, and the band he formed afterwards is named after unexplained lights reported by wartime pilots.

— Initials: D.G.
