Lying in medal position at the 1988 Olympics in a rising gale, this Canadian sailor turned off the course, pulled two drowning rivals out of the sea — and then went back and finished the race, well out of contention.

During the fifth race of the Finn class at the Seoul Olympics on 24 September 1988, in winds around 35 knots, Lawrence Lemieux was in medal contention when he broke off to reach a capsized Singaporean 470. He pulled crewman Joseph Chan from the water and helmsman Siew Shaw Her off the hull and stayed with them until a Korean naval vessel arrived, then resumed racing and finished well down the fleet, ending the series 11th overall. He has said since that he did what any sailor would have done.
