Mid-sentence during a 2006 television interview, this European filmmaker was shot — by an air rifle, fired from a nearby building. He glanced down at the wound, remarked that it was not a significant bullet, and carried on with the interview.
The full story
During a 2006 BBC interview with critic Mark Kermode, Werner Herzog was struck by a pellet from an air rifle fired from a nearby building. He dismissed the wound as insignificant and finished the interview. He had previously eaten a boiled shoe after losing a bet to Errol Morris, and had a steamship dragged over a hill for Fitzcarraldo.
The clues we handed out
— He once ate his own shoe, boiled, after losing a bet to a fellow documentary director.
— For one film he had a 320-tonne steamship hauled over a hill in the Peruvian jungle rather than fake the shot.
— He narrated the story of a man who lived among Alaskan grizzlies until they killed him.
— German, unmistakable voice, and he has played a villain in a Star Wars series.
— Initials: W.H.
