Told that fans were being charged service fees that nearly doubled the $20 tickets he had insisted on, this English frontman said publicly that he was sickened — and had the fees refunded inside a day.
The full story
For The Cure's 2023 'Shows of a Lost World' North American tour, Robert Smith refused dynamic pricing and set face values as low as $20. When tickets went on sale on 15-16 March 2023 fans posted screenshots showing four $20 tickets totalling $172.10 with fees. Smith said publicly he was 'sickened' and that artists have no control over fees. Within about a day Ticketmaster agreed the fees had been unduly high, automatically refunded $10 to every buyer of a lowest-tier ticket and $5 to every other buyer, and cut fees on remaining sales.
