Told to get the booed singer off the stage at a 1992 tribute concert, this songwriter and actor walked out to her instead and said: "Don't let the bastards get you down."
The full story
At Bob Dylan's 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration at Madison Square Garden on 16 October 1992, Sinéad O'Connor was met with sustained booing from a large part of the crowd, two weeks after she had torn up a photograph of Pope John Paul II on Saturday Night Live. Kris Kristofferson, who was hosting, was instructed by organisers to take her off stage. He declined, walked out to her and said 'Don't let the bastards get you down'; she replied 'I'm not down.' He released a song about the night, 'Sister Sinéad', in 2009.
