In June 2019 this former satirist took a seat in front of a US House subcommittee, looked at the rows of empty chairs where members were meant to be sitting, and told the handful who had turned up that they should be ashamed of themselves.
The full story
On 11 June 2019 Jon Stewart testified before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties in support of permanently authorising the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, appearing alongside sick 9/11 responders. Addressing the many absent members he said, 'You should be ashamed of yourselves for not being here,' and rejected the argument that the fund was a local matter: 'I'm awfully tired of hearing this is a New York issue.' The full Judiciary Committee ordered the bill reported the following day, and the Never Forget the Heroes Act was signed into law on 29 July 2019 as Public Law 116-34. Stewart had campaigned on the issue since devoting a December 2010 episode of The Daily Show to the original Zadroga Act.
